I’ve started trimming these small bowls in a way where I both carve the clay away, and shear off a larger portion of the excess all in one go.   That’s what you saw at the start, the sharp tungsten carbide trimmer is shoved into all that excess clay within the foot-ring at an angle and I dig it in until that central nib sort of just comes loose, shearing away in my hands as I lift the blade out. It’s tricky to do right, as in the moment it dislodges a lot of force is asserted and the bowl tries to fight its way out of the restraints that are holding it in place.   It’s a technique that only affects a brief second in time but it makes hollowing out the foot slightly faster. Otherwise, these are pesky, highly measured vessels to trim, I draw on the turning tools blade so I know how high to carve the base and I use a measured pair of callipers to set the width of the foot too, this way every single bowl will be more of less the same.   There is of course some variance, some feet are narrower or they’re a few millimetres taller but ultimately, what dictates this is the shape of the inside curve. If interior form is different, I have to compensate for that when turning the outside and I assess this in first moment the bowl is picked up and held—there’s a second of judgement to inform me whether to trim more or less.   #pottery #bowl #handmade #wheelthrownpottery #satisfying
