I’ve been in practice 20 years and was always against universal care…for a few reasons. However, the greed of private insurers and 3rd party parasites has gotten completely out of control. Personally, I had to opt out of insurance completely last year and go consierge. Something has to change. Too many patients are suffering and physicians are losing our ability to practice independently. A recent study estimates universal care would save millions of dollars and 100,000 lives annually.

I know the assumption is (not sure if it’s validated by studies) is if people have access to healthcare, they would seek care to diagnose and treat a condition before it required expensive surgeries or inpatient stays. If I designed a system, I would use Medicare/Medicaid money to buy the equipment-for example a hospital would not purchase an MRI machine and wouldn’t recover equipment costs by billing per service as an example.

I work at an FQHC, so I see a lot of uninsured patients. I do think utilization would go up just based on my anecdotal experience. However, my staff and I spend the vast majority of our time fighting through PAs, so it very well could balance out. Even if there is a pay cut, I personally think it might be worth it for the peace of not having to fight to practice medicine.

Everybody acts like this is a stand alone issue. It’s Medicare for all and a stripping down of the for profit health care system. Not to mention stronger regulations on food. Stronger regulations on monopolies. That way people are healthier and we’re not pouring money into executives pockets. No one in health should speak the word profit. Everyone gets paid a decent amount (not millions/billions) any extra is split between an incidentals fund and returned to the people. That’s why people write books on it and not just post tiktoks.

Yes, America is overpaying for healthcare. But we’re not necessarily overpaying for health. We’re overpaying for prices, complexity, fragmentation and expensive episodes of care while often underinvesting in the things that keep those episodes from happening.

You did an earlier video about eliminating healthcare payment processing as a for-profit business, and I think that’s the key. There’s nothing wrong with doctors, scientists, hospitals, and other providers operating under and competing under a profit incentive . That’s where progress comes from. but having the payment processing part of it, structured as an independent third-party for profit private business enterprise is the root of most of the problems with our healthcare system.

I see 500,000 insurance agents denying care to benefit their shareholders. And another 500,000 medical professionals advocating for their patients care. The two systems cancel each other out. Just eliminate them.
