@cybersecuredad: 👀 That school Chromebook might not stop watching when your kid gets home. Most families assume the monitoring only happens during the school day, on school grounds. Often it doesn't. Whether it runs at home is usually a setting the district picks, and plenty leave it on around the clock. Here's the data. In national research from the Center for Democracy and Technology, about 81 percent of teachers said their school uses activity monitoring software, and only about 1 in 4 said it's limited to school hours. Tools like GoGuardian and Gaggle can review browsing, searches, and content typed into documents, emails, and chats. GoGuardian even has an "At Home Mode" that districts can toggle, which tells you this is a choice, not a fixed rule. Want to see what's on your kid's device? ✅ Open Chrome on the Chromebook and type chrome://management in the address bar. It shows whether the browser is managed by the school, and often the extensions they installed. 📋 Type chrome://policy for the full list of what's being controlled. Some districts lock these pages down. If yours does, that's an answer too. 🔒 Email the district's tech office and ask, in writing, which software is installed, what it collects, and whether it runs at home. 📱 For anything genuinely private, let your kid use a separate personal device. Treat the school laptop as school property that's never fully private. You usually can't switch the school's monitoring off on the school's device. Knowing it's there is the protection. The Chromebook is school property. It’s not your kids personal device.

Yep, GoGuardian tracks their online activity at home. I don't let my kids use theirs for anything but school work.

My son only uses his school laptop for school. He has his own personal computer that he does everything else on. So unless the school computer is some how remotely tracking his personal computer…I’m not too worried. But besides, I keep track of most activity (if I feel he’s acting suspicious) and talk to him about that. So far, he’s done nothing out of character on his own computer, school computer or his phone.

Have both cameras covered with the slide camera guards, then stored in a fairaday bag when not in use.

it’s not really a secret. They tell the kids it’s always monitored, even at home. I believe it’s even in the stack of paperwork you have to sign at the beginning of the year.

GoGuardian is crazy and we limit who has licenses and access extremely heavily because of what it is capable of. Weve told the company for years to add more layers of settings so we can turn off some of the capabilities!

I refused to take my Chromebook home in 2017 because we were told by the teachers the software they had could also see what people on out home wifi network were doing.

read the whole disclosure, it is 100% monitored by the school. only school work gets done on it. IF you want control over your privacy buy your own laptop/pc
