One time I sat outside with my grandpa, who has had seven strokes, in silence. While sitting next to me in his wheelchair he tried telling me something but struggled. He struggled getting to the words due to his current state, which made him mad at himself and emotional, which then made me sad. The only thing I could gather was the words Elvis and favorite. So I instantly grabbed my phone and put on can’t help falling in love with you. As soon as he heard the song he looked at me, then closed his eyes and smiled, before singing through the whole song with next to no implications. Just the way he beautifully used to it with his choir. I joined in and we sat there together singing peacefully without any worries. From not being able to express a single word, he finally could voice lyrics and his feelings with ease. Those are the last three minutes I’ve seen of him being his true self, at peace, not worrying about everything else, and doing what he loved the most. The gift of music is something I will never take for granted, and this song will always have a special place to me.
