It’s not your no that has caused an issue. It’s the audacity of the family member to ask this of you

I think the fact that he’s struggling with that tells you that the answer should absolutely know. He didn’t sound once like he got excited about the idea or anything. It sounds like he wants to do it out of kindness to that family member, but being kind doesn’t mean you should sacrifice yourself in this way. It sucks saying no to people you care about, but keep your boundaries. You’ll think yourself later.

This is such a clear NO from the outside looking in. I hope he turned them down. Children can't be quite so easily compartmentalized as people think and if he's already having issues and feeling pressured, it's only going to get worse once a living breathing child enters the picture - and the family!

And having a child you don’t truly want will only lead to far more drama and strained relationships down the road. By having the child you would ensure the one thing you want to avoid (family drama) will comes to fruition.

The family is only thinking of the potential human as a baby not a someday this human will be an adult with questions. Those answers might cause a lot of hurt and confusion especially if the dad chooses minimal or no contact. That puts pressure on him to basically be a parent and he has already chosen not to take that path.

I agree with Kelley with everything she said. May I just offer another opinion/aspect to consider that is also a worry? I am a toddler mama myself (also from Melbourne) and as a toddler mama listening to this, what popped into my head personally was that I worry for u and for the child that if u decide to use ur DNA and have a child, and then they tell the child that u are the uncle, I really worry for u that u will look at ur child and love him/her so much that being the occasional uncle won’t be enough for u, and then there will be heartbreak and tension and confusion at some point. I may be wrong, but my toddler is my whole 🌍 and if that’s how u end up feeling about ur child, it’s going to be hard for u to be the occasional uncle.

it sounds like the answer is no. so it should be no. but for anyone who sees this and might be considering it for themselves, if you do donate sperm to a loved one, get a lawyer involved. draft up an ironclad contract of what you will and won't do for the child. you cannot just trust everything will work out or have a handshake agreement

I would say no. I think them being upset now is better than a life of you having grief and hard feelings over a child that is yours but not yours.

If they respect you, they will accept NO for an answer. Also, you owe no one an explanation.

The fact that anyone in the extended family is even aware that this conversation is happening means that the couple that approached him presumed he or his husband would accept and decided to share all over the place. That alone is such a betrayal, I would have a hard time forgiving that couple for putting me in that position. NO ONE owes anyone their DNA and procreative function.

What if the child ends up an unhappy teenager or adult because of “life happens” ,will he be ok or will bring profund sadness and regrets ..what if the child ends up in great financial need of family need will he be distant or will be a longtime rescuer as his feeling as “dad” are put to test when your flesh and blood is in great need..or maybe this child could be his best friend in old age..

yeah no dont have the child if they dont know your views or are willing to accept them that you dont want children then they will likely push the boundaries when the child is born and make you more involved then you wish to be. they can go anywhere else and get DNA
