I am only an ally in all this. I am following along because I want to learn too. But can I just say I am so encouraged by how you are walking through this.

For me (I’m nonbinary), I feel more comfortable when the group is diverse. I like to see different types of people (body types, ethnicities, skin colours, economic status etc). If they’re inclusive of every type of person, they’re good people that are safe to be around and others feel safe there too. As a pale person I don’t want to be associated with groups that don’t feel safe for friends I might bring along

By watching. Looking at their social media. Listen, and then judge.

As an ex professional that’s signposted to groups before, I’d usually recommend groups ran by orgs that have a level of professional experience and a good community track record! Unfortunately others can be counter-productive at best, or unsafe at worst! That’s not to say community led groups can’t be great places, but if you want guaranteed security, that’s usually the best way to go. It wasn’t uncommon I’d have having to educate community based groups on why their handlings on groups are unsafe! 😩

in Boston we have BAGLY, OUT Metrowest, 2-3groups in Salem, some based at the hospital outpatient areas. my kids found community in different groups. the older was more civic minded and political and meshed with OG BAGLY group in Copley Sq. Boston. the younger sibling was more creative and social minded and meshed with Out Metrowest in Wellesley. if you are going to a clinic for GAC, they may have a list that their clients may have recommended. their therapist may also know of a few.

by seeing different body types, skin colors, genders/pronouns, sexualities, people of different backgrounds, different religions, etc! just diversity in general is always good! -Abigail (she/they/kit/fox)

If a group is not supportive of people with neo pronouns that’s a pretty red flag for me. I also find that if they showcase patterns of judgement or oppression Olympics within the queer community that’s not a group I want to be a part of. Everyone should be able to share their experiences without anyone else’s experiences needing to dethrone, the other person’s. So for instance, if a trans woman is talking about her experiences as a trans person it would be disrespectful for a trans man to attempt to overhaul the conversation, and vice versa. And this would apply to the entire queer community. I also think that it’s incredibly important to point out when someone is blaming oppression on another group in the queer community cause that is also a massive red flag.

that really depends on the context and the group, and the means of communication or platform. some of the Facebook groups are definitely fake or dangerous. Reddit is a minefield gatekeepers i and self- dislike. the only true way to really be able to tell them apart is to take the time and engage with them slowly, watching for signs of isolation, negativity, and misinformation. always verify information through other means. never take anything directly at face value. never agree to a Meetup in a private setting unless it's going to be a large group and you know more than just one or two people. a lot of the same rules for single adult women trying to make friends in public spaces would apply here.

I watched the social media posts and the reaction to them. if the post and comments work for me I would engage, otherwise I would walk away. Me so far PFLAG has been great in my area.

I would stay far away from transmeds (trans medicalist) (they use the “🏳️‍⚧️➕” emoji combo) they are known for invalidating people who dont fit their idea of trans, they constantly bring up dysphoria and have a huge tendency to invalidate those who dont pass (even if the rest of you fits their idea of what being trans is they do not respect trans people who dont pass)
