@migraineswithmina: Things I wish everyone knew about magnesium for migraine 🧠 1️⃣ Not all magnesium is the same. • Oxide: most studied for migraine, but more likely to cause diarrhea • Citrate: may be a good option if you also struggle with constipation • Glycinate: often gentler on the stomach and commonly chosen when sleep or anxiety are also concerns • L-threonate: may have benefits for brain health and cognitive function 2️⃣ It’s usually preventive. Think daily use, not just during an attack. 3️⃣ Dose matters. Migraine studies often use about 400–600 mg/day. 4️⃣ Citrate: can loosen stools, so it may be a good option if constipation is an issue—especially if you’re dealing with constipation from a CGRP migraine medication. 5️⃣ It may help with aura. Some evidence suggests benefit in migraine with aura. 6️⃣ Check “elemental magnesium.” That’s the number that really matters on the label. 7️⃣ Give it time. Benefits may take weeks to months. 8️⃣ Menstrual migraine: magnesium may be especially worth considering if attacks cluster around your period; small studies suggest it may reduce menstrual migraine days. 9️⃣ Always check with your doctor. Magnesium isn’t right for everyone—especially with kidney disease or certain medications—so discuss the right form and dose for you. #migraine #migrainerelief #brainhealth

Why does IV magnesium help during acute migraines but otc magnesium, regardless of type, takes so long to help? Im guessing its just the dose being so high?

What magnesium form is best for menstrual migraine? Also, do you see people get a cluster PRIOR to menstrual? Mine has been approximately 12-5 days prior to period so far (still going) 😭

I’ve been on magnesium glycinate but have noticed more migraines outside of my menstrual migraines. I have GI issues so am afraid of oxide. I also started Zoloft the same time as the magnesium glycinate do you think that could be making them worse or the magnesium?

400 mg of glycinate ain’t doing shiiiii for me. I’m supposed to wait another month before bumping it up to 600mg, which will probably do nothing also. 🙄
