ECOWAS PARLIAMENT CONVENES IN ACCRA TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE AND REGIONAL SECURITY Today, I participated in the joint opening of the Second Parliamentary Seminar and Second Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament for 2026 here in Accra. The session was opened by the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Hadja Memounatou Ibrahimatu, on the very important theme: “Climate Change as a Factor of Environmental Degradation, Population Displacement and Growing Insecurity in the ECOWAS Region.” The Speaker rightly emphasized that climate change is no longer just an environmental concern. In West Africa, it is now a development, humanitarian, migration, peace and security challenge – affecting livelihoods, displacing populations, and increasing pressure on our natural resources. I agree entirely with her call that as Parliamentarians, we must ensure that international climate commitments become funded policies, effective national legislation, and tangible results for our people. Parliamentary oversight of climate resilience budgets is critical. The session also paid glowing tribute to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose birthday fell on September 21st. His vision for African unity and Pan-Africanism continues to inspire our regional integration agenda. Later, the ECOWAS Parliament delegation paid a courtesy call on the Vice President of the Republic, Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. During the call, I had the opportunity to make a brief remark on behalf of the delegation. As I stated, anything which gives meaning to the vision of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is something we will always embrace and support. We thanked Her Excellency for graciously hosting us and for the inspiring address at the opening session. I pray that the rest of the programme will be very successful and that the resolutions adopted by the ECOWAS Parliament will meaningfully impact climate change, peace and security in our sub-region. We thank H.E. President John Dramani Mahama and Rt. Hon. Speaker Alban Bagbin for hosting the ECOWAS Parliament in Accra. Hon. James Agalga Majority Leader & MP, Builsa North
