NICU Awareness Month 🤍 I’ve tried to write this a few times, and I still don’t really know how to put it into words. We’re home. Letty is here. She made it through surgery, 85 days in the NICU, and more than I ever should have had to watch my baby go through. And I am so unbelievably grateful. But I also don’t think I’ve come to terms with any of it yet. I can talk about the NICU. I can tell you her story. I can tell you about her surgery, her oxygen, her tubes, her feeds, all of it. But then I hear the sounds from the NICU in a video—the monitors, the alarms, the ventilator—and suddenly I’m crying. Sometimes just thinking about that room brings me to tears. I don’t think I realized how much of myself I had to shut off while we were there. You just survive. You wake up, walk into that hospital, sit beside your baby and do it all over again. There isn’t really time to process what you’re watching or how terrified you are because your baby needs you. And then somehow you get to go home. Everyone tells you how amazing it is to finally be home, and it is. God, it is. I will never stop being grateful that I get to wake up with my baby under my roof. But I think now that we’re safe enough to breathe, my brain is finally starting to understand what we actually went through. And I’m not there yet. I’m grateful and traumatized. Relieved and still scared. So incredibly proud of Letty and still heartbroken for the tiny baby who had to fight that hard in the first place. Those things can all exist at the same time. So for NICU Awareness Month, I’m thinking about the babies still in those rooms. The moms sitting beside an isolette right now. The parents learning an entirely new language they never wanted to know. And the families who are home but still carry the NICU with them. Because you don’t just walk out those doors and leave it all behind. I know I didn’t. 🤍 #NICUAwarenessMonth #NICUMom #NICUJourney #CDH #CDHAwareness
