While people love to fuss, Florence has most ordinary things that other medium cities have and better than some. There's not as much as large cities but the cost of living is lower. Also Florence is a well connected transportation hub being on I95 & I20. You can go east and be at the beach in less than 2 hours so day trips without a hotel are east. Go west a few hours you can camp in the mountains. Go south and you can be in Atlanta in 4 hours or Florida in 8 hours. Go north at you'll be in NYC in 10 hours. The only down part are relatives who decide to stay the night as it's halfway between most things. Don't want to drive? There's an airport, Amtrak, & bus station.
