I hate when adults look at a kid who's learning and say "it's obvious" or "it's common sense". No, it's not. Literally everything we do as humans that isn't governed by bodily reflex is learned behavior. You have to teach a kid everything, and you should do it with the patience and compassion as if it's their first time using their hands.

I grew up with parents going "Take this. Take it. Not like that. I said take it. Hold it. HOLD IT. BE CAREFUL. I SAID BE CAREFUL." And if they just said "Hold this with both hands because it is heavy and we don't want to drop it" that would probably be it. And maybe the kid wouldn't listen or maybe they would still drop it. But that's learning. Parents often want to just impart information like it's innate and their kid must be stupid for not just knowing

I think you did a great job with him. It's better than yelling at him the entire time because he doesn't know exactly how it's done immediately like our parents did

I like to include the "why" when teaching. Not just tell to do something a certain way. Like the shifting weight of the liquid in the tank.

I think your instructions to your son was perfect! I realized my niece & nephew didn’t know any communication skills so I started to teach them. For example: don’t interrupt your sister, listen and then respond to what she just said, don’t just don’t bring back every conversation to yourself, don’t answer a question from several minutes ago, don’t talk too long so the other person doesn’t feel like they have a chance to respond, etc. My sister came home and asked why I was doing this. She said “am I really supposed to teach them this?” Um… yes.

I remember being acreamed at "Its common sense!!" but I WAS TEN! Its not common sense for a child! Its new knowledge! Amazing to see this, and a good reminder to be aware of how new things are to kids, even if theyre bigger 😄

My dad convinced me to buy a run down VW beetle to fix up together, after less than an hour working on it with me "just getting in the way" he had a temper tantrum and gave up, it ended up being scraped. You're doing an amazing job!

Isn’t that how you’re supposed to teach? I think the reason some parents resort to yelling is because they forget it’s the kids first time ever. It’s not always intuitive until it’s taught.

this is how kids need to be taught! my father was MIA & my FIL just yelled & lost his temper irrationally fast. I'd love to see boomer parenting techniques fall out of fashion 🥹

i expect to teach kids like this, they're literally still brand new to this world but unfortunately its the same with adults. I taught adults ranging from 20 to about 60 years old and you have to walk them through step by step as if they've never used their hands before.

My daughter not only needs these kind of lessons her first time with something, she needs refreshers every few years. I taught her basic things like how to wash her hair every 3 years since she was 6ish (old enough to wash it herself). She's 14 now and still has struggle days.
