Folic acid is often called the “pregnancy vitamin,” but it plays important roles throughout life, for BOTH women and men. Here’s why: 🩸 1. Helps make healthy red blood cells Folate is essential for normal red blood cell production. A deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia, which may cause fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath. 🧬 2. Your body needs it to make DNA and new cells Every time your body grows, repairs tissues, or makes new cells, folate is involved. It’s especially important in rapidly dividing cells. 🤰 3. It should be started BEFORE pregnancy Major medical guidelines recommend that people who could become pregnant take 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) of folic acid daily, beginning at least one month before conception and continuing through early pregnancy. The neural tube closes very early, often before someone realizes they’re pregnant. 👶 4. Helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects Adequate folic acid before and during early pregnancy significantly lowers the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. 👨 5. Men need folate too Folate supports normal DNA synthesis and is involved in sperm production. While fertility depends on many factors, maintaining adequate folate intake is part of overall reproductive health. 🧠 6. It works together with Vitamin B12 Both vitamins are needed for healthy blood cell formation and nervous system function. Taking folic acid can correct the anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency but does not treat the nerve damage, which is why persistent symptoms should be medically evaluated. 🥬 7. You can get folate from food, too Good sources include leafy green vegetables, beans, lentils, citrus fruits, avocado, and fortified grains. Supplements may still be recommended for some people, especially those planning pregnancy or with certain medical conditions. 💚 Prevention is always better than treatment. Small, evidence-based habits today can make a big difference tomorrow.
