If I had to start a fashion brand again tomorrow with no contacts, no suppliers and no reputation, hereโ€™s what Iโ€™d do: Iโ€™d start by finding the customer. Iโ€™d get incredibly specific about who she is, what she already buys, what she canโ€™t find and why she would choose my brand over the hundreds already competing for her attention. Then Iโ€™d build backwards from there. Iโ€™d create a very small first collection with a few pieces I believed could become signatures. Iโ€™d obsess over margin from day one. A product can sell incredibly well and still be terrible for your business if the numbers donโ€™t work. Iโ€™d test demand before committing to huge quantities Iโ€™d start creating content before I had anything to sell. Iโ€™d want people invested in the story or building the brand, not discovering it for the first time on launch day. Iโ€™d find great suppliers, but Iโ€™d focus even harder on becoming a great customer to them. Clear communication, realistic expectations & building relationships. And Iโ€™d keep as much cash in the business as possible. When I started KIVARI, I didnโ€™t have an industry network to open doors for me. I had to learn by doing. 15 years later, if you took every contact away from me, Iโ€™d still know how to rebuild. Because contacts can accelerate a business but knowing how to build one is far more valuable.
