iPhone Food Photography｜Simple Tricks That Actually Work: After taking food photos for a while, I’ve figured out a few little tricks that actually make a difference. You really don’t need to memorize a bunch of camera settings. Just get these three things right: light, angle, and composition. That’s honestly enough for everyday food photos 🍜 📱 Before you shoot ▪️ Find natural light: If there’s a window, sit near it. Natural light almost always looks better than harsh restaurant ceiling lights. Try to let the light come from the side of your food. It adds more depth and texture, especially for desserts, bread, steak, and coffee. ▪️ Lower the exposure a little: Tap on your food and drag the little sun icon down. I usually go around -0.3 to -0.7. This is especially useful for white plates, cream, desserts, and anything with bright highlights. A little less exposure can instantly make the photo look more polished. ▪️ Don’t always stick to 1x: Use 1x for a full table or wider scene. Try 2x for a single dish. Use 3x when you want details like crispy layers, melted cheese, or meat texture. Instead of getting super close, step back a little and zoom in. The perspective usually looks much more natural. 📸 Try these angles ▪️ 45° is the safest option: Great for burgers, pasta, steak, cakes, and most dishes. You get both the height and the surface of the food, so the photo naturally feels more appetizing. ▪️ Go overhead for a full table: Perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, Japanese set meals, or coffee + dessert. Shoot straight from above, clean up the table first, then leave a few plates, cups, or utensils in the frame. It makes the photo feel much more intentional. ▪️ Go lower when you want more impact: Bring your phone closer to the food’s eye level. This works really well for burgers, pizza, ramen, and steak. The food feels bigger and more three-dimensional. ▪️ Don’t get too close with 0.5x: Ultra-wide can make plates and food look strangely stretched. If you want a close-up, try 2x and step back instead. 🍰 One composition trick I always use ▪️ Stop putting everything in the center: Move your main dish slightly to one side. Leave some breathing room around it. Then add something small like a coffee cup, fork, or hand. The photo instantly feels more natural. ▪️ Look for a foreground: Use a cup slightly out of focus in front of your coffee. Let some cutlery enter the frame when shooting dessert. Even a flower or another plate can work. Once you have a little foreground + subject + background, the photo feels much less flat. ▪️ Movement makes food look more appetizing: Cutting into a steak. Picking up noodles. Holding a burger. Pouring coffee. Pulling apart melted cheese. These moments often look better than a perfectly arranged plate. Take a few shots in a row. You’ll usually catch one that feels natural. 🎨 Keep the editing simple ▪️ Don’t reach for a filter right away: I usually adjust: Exposure → Highlights → Shadows → Temperature If the photo was taken in natural light, adding just a tiny bit of warmth can make food look more inviting. ▪️ Bring down the highlights: White plates, cream, sauces, and shiny surfaces can easily get blown out. Lower the highlights first, then add a little contrast if needed. The details usually come back immediately. ▪️ Crop + straighten at the end: Too much empty table? Crop it.
