The Lucas terrifies me, I don’t even need a specific patient. It’s the Lucas that sends me

16 year old died from an asthma attack bc his family couldn’t afford his inhaler. Family decided to donate his organs but couldn’t get the day off work or afford to take off work to say goodbye or do his honor walk. Just know I cried as I walked him to the OR. I made sure that he didn’t go alone.

Coded a 16 year old covered in self harm injuries. She didn’t make it. Her father passed 30 min later down the hall. The cries from the grandmother who raised them both still haunts me.

Aside from the blood & guts.. the absolute worst thing is the parents screaming for their child to come back… you can’t unhear… it stays….

NICU nurse here. Sometimes there are things worse than death. Like when I have to code 24 weekers. My hand being bigger than their body and doing compressions. Parents not wanting us to stop. Or when a baby is DNR, and some parents not wanting to be at bedside when the baby passes. So we as the nurses will sit and hold the baby because we don’t want them to die by themselves.

As someone who works nights, it’s always been the clothes families show up in during the middle of the night. Really put in perspective that these patients are someone’s most loved person, they’re so loved that toothpaste stained pajamas, unbuttoned shirts, bed head, different shoes show up for them.

As an ER/trauma nurse, I once had to scoop up a little boy out of the ambulance who had ridden with his mother whom he had watched be tortured and stabbed and left for dead for several days by her boyfriend. About 4 years old and he was home alone with her when the ambulance came. The way that he jumped into my arms and let me hold him. I’ll never forget and it’s been 20 years.

Most people would not last one day as an ICU nurse and that’s why we need to bow down to anyone with the willingness to be there at life’s darkest moments. Thank you doesn’t seem enough.

A 42 year old woman about to be intubated due to respiratory failure during Covid, her husband was already in our other ICU on a ventilator. I asked her if she wanted to call or text anyone first, knowing she possibly couldn’t talk, and possibly wouldn’t walk out of the hospital. She took her phone, tried to text her mom… she couldn’t… so I simply took it from her and typed “I love you so much” & hit send. Both she and her husband never came off the vent 🥺

Not an ICU nurse, just a COVID family. When my dad was dying in the ICU, the patient down the hall coded. I watched her 14 year old daughter run in while they were working on her. An hour later I was in the hallway of the ICU when she came out, she was so dazed and confused I just opened my arms and she collapsed into them sobbing. She asked me to take her out to the car, I walked her down to the parking lot holding her tight to me the whole time. I went back up and her dad walked out right after his wife passed. I held him too. I'll never forget them. I don't even know their names.

My mother had terminal cancer, a major stroke and was about to have a pulmonary embolism. She had only been diagnosed with cancer three weeks previously. Hearing her voice trying to fight through the stroke, no movement in half of her body, she was blind in an eye. She was crying to my brother and I apologising for the trouble she had caused.
