The principle that murder can warrant the forfeiture of the murderer’s life runs throughout the Torah: “life for life.” Romans 13 carries the principle into the New Testament: God gives governing authorities the responsibility to “bear the sword” and punish those who do evil. What about forgiveness? Spiritual redemption doesn’t negate earthly justice. Two things can be true.
