Years ago, I worked in a large supermarket on the east coast, I had a young couple with 2 small kids sheepishly approach me, the man began speaking Russian and was clearly upset, trying to explain what was wrong but I couldn’t understand what he was saying. I tried my best to reassure them I would find help….his wife was near tears, I just knew they really needed help…I went to the staff then used intercom system, paging the patrons asking of anyone could speak Russian to come to courtesy counter, but no one came. I didn’t want to give up, so I called the university, found a professor who spoke Russian put them one the phone with the man who almost fell apart, so relieved that finally someone could understand him…..after a few minutes of animated conversation with the professor I got back on the line, the professor informed me they had their 4 passports in a bag, mistakenly left in a shopping cart…they figured it was lost or stolen and were scheduled to leave the country in 3 days..I asked the professor to reassure them I would try to locate their bag, & asked him if he could assist them with phone #’s to immigration etc just in case the passports were not found. I got 2 other employees to help search the carts, bins & around the entire property …about 10 minutes later one of them came running in from one of the cart corral’ out on the parking lot with their bag in hand, passports, cash everything still inside….they were so over joyed with relief, hugging us all, repeating in broken English “Thank you! Thank you!” I can’t imagine the sheer panic & fear they were feeling….it was a team effort to have such a happy ending…if it was me in that situation, I could only hope people would lend a hand, compassion goes a long way ♥️🫠🇨🇦
