This is great, and I feel it is so brave if you to share, in such a vulnerable way, the difficult lessons you learned through your relationship with your son. It takes a lot of work on the ego to be able to do this, thank you so much for sharing! I needed this! It made me realize that if I were a parent I would most certainly cause traumatic invalidation, bc that’s the relationship I have with myself, but I’m definitely going to work on this, who knows, maybe if I have children their lives will be totally different bc of what you taught me in this video, tysm!

Thank you for sharing your story and your expertise with us all. My parents are gone so I wasn’t able to reconcile with them, but I hope we can break these cycles for our kids and their kids.

Would you happen to have a YouTube channel with these videos available? I would love for my daughter to see these videos, but she doesn’t have TikTok. I think it would be so informative for her; I know it was for me.

I just wanted to say thank you. As an estranged adult child, these videos remind me that there is hope. It’s very easy to be angry and vengeful and hurt, but I know that underneath that I’ll always have a sliver of hope that my mom will see that there is a way forward. I think the hardest part of being the adult child in this dynamic is that it feels like we want so little. Just acknowledgment, an apology, and changed behavior going forward. I often have to remind myself that, for her, it seems to feel a lot bigger than that. Was there any specific moment that you chose to do the work/look inward? Or was there something your child said that made you start reflecting? Thank you again for your content, and I think the fact that you were willing to reflect and recognize shortcomings is the most beautiful and amazing thing. I’m so happy you two are close with your son again. 🥹

It’s 7am where I am and I’m in tears from your videos (good ones)! Thank you for the language, your insight, your raw honesty and authenticity. I don’t know it my parents will ever get to the point you are at, but having this language alone is so healing. Thank you. 😭

Can you share an actual example of what it looks like to invalidate/validate in practice?

Thank you for sharing your story. When I watched your first 2 videos I just started crying 😢 I tell my husband all the time, that my mom just doesn’t listen to me. Now I understand that I was never validated and still not. As a parent, I hope to break this cycle. Please keep sharing!!

the problem is that I can't even get to any form of positive interaction. Every single interaction goes south! So I guess I am going to be cut off when she is older and I am kinda looking forward to doing it first. So I am far from understanding how to get there.

I see that you are a coach. Do you work with adult children who need help understanding and working through their reasons for low contact? You’ve described me. I sent your traumatic invalidation video to my therapist and told her this is the best explanation for why I am where I am

When you say validate the person as to who and where they are right now - how can I validate the person who is not validating (and is cruel and malicious). I am watching this on a family relationship. 💔

In your previous video, I asked you some tough questions. You answered them honestly and I sensed no defensiveness (shame) in your answer. You actually could have scrolled by and not engaged but you chose to answer. I got a lot of push back from others in that video defending you. That tells me there is something fundamentally wrong with how parents believe they are entitled to treat their children of all ages. This is a generational issue. I am the cycle breaker. I think it’s important that people understand where this behavior from parents come from so that it can change. Correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like even you feel better now that you have changed your parenting style? It must be stressful to have to micromanage your child and be afraid they are not living to their potential. Understanding them and letting go of control must bring some sort of relief. Regardless of that, I can be understanding and empathic to you and still question why you thought chronically invalidating your son would be a good thing. But I mostly feel for your son and the impact it had on him. How hurt he must have been to think his life would be better without his parents in it. I’m happy for you all that you are healing but most of all I’m happy for your son that he finally got the parents he always deserved. My husband never got that. His mom died and he will always believe she didn’t really accept or love him the way he needed. I will be the same. Your work is important and I look forward to hearing more.
