The story behind Rare Earth’s rendition of "Get Ready" is a classic tale of Detroit blue-collar hustle, late-night Motown studio sessions, and an accidental radio revolution Before signing with Motown, the group spent years gigging around Detroit under the name The Sunliners. Deeply rooted in the city's R&B scene, they added Smokey Robinson's 1966 Temptations hit "Get Ready" to their live sets. As audience reactions grew, the band turned the 3-minute soul track into a massive, 21-minute jam—using it as the grand finale for their live shows. In 1968, Motown executive Barney Ales signed the group to anchor Motown's new rock imprint label, which was named Rare Earth Records after the band itself. The 2:00 AM Marathon Recording Session When it came time to record their debut Motown LP in June 1969, the band realized they didn't have enough tracks written to fill out a full album. Saxophonist Gil Bridges suggested doing what they did live: record their entire 21-minute version of "Get Ready" to take up all of Side B. Motown brass was initially skeptical of putting a half-hour jam on a record, but the band pushed forward. Recording in Motown's studio on West Grand Boulevard between 2:00 AM and 8:00 AM over five nights, they laid down the 21-minute track in just two takes. They blew the first attempt four minutes in, restarted, and nailed the entire marathon jam on the second try. Studio engineer crowd noise was later mixed in to match their live-show energy. When the Get Ready album was released in late 1969, it sat on store shelves for nearly six months with zero traction. Then came the turning point: Emerging Album-Oriented Rock (AOR) and R&B station DJs began discovering the 21-minute album track. DJs loved it—not just because it was a groove, but because a 21-minute track gave them time to take a coffee or bathroom break while it played. Nighttime listeners in Washington D.C. went wild for it, spreading momentum to other major markets. Seeing the organic underground response, Motown cut a punchy 2:46 edit for a single. Chart Triumph: Released in early 1970, the single rocketed to No.4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No.20 on the R&B charts, far outperforming the peak chart position of The Temptations' 1966 original. Because the 21-minute album cut featured a raw, 2-minute drum solo by lead vocalist/drummer Pete Rivera, the LP became a prized possession for DJ Kool Herc and early 1970s South Bronx DJs. They looped Rare Earth's breakbeat at neighborhood block parties, turning the rock jam into a fundamental rhythmic foundation for the birth of breakdancing and early hip-hop culture.
