As a Filipino, I respect our Constitution, our courts, and the rule of law. However, I also believe that we have the right to question what is happening, especially when the person involved is the Vice President of the Republic, a national leader who received the mandate of more than 32 million Filipino voters.
The fact that Vice President Sara Duterte holds the second-highest elected position in the country does not place her above the law, but neither should her position make her a target of politically motivated actions. Any warrant of arrest must be based on genuine probable cause and must be the result of an impartial and independent judicial process, not political pressure or retaliation.
At a time when impeachment proceedings and other political controversies are already surrounding the Vice President, the timing of these developments is understandably alarming to many Filipinos.
We should not blindly defend anyone, nor should we blindly condemn anyone. Let the evidence be examined fairly, let due process prevail, and let the law be applied equally to everyone, regardless of political affiliation or position.
That is what true justice and democracy should look like.
