This is correct. The extracurriculars are what are distinguishing all the perfect stat kids at this level and that requires planning from like 8th grade. It’s not great for kids, honestly. No room to actually explore.

Extracurriculars are such a huge part of it. The amount of money it takes to really stand out is insane. Having parents that have the time,energy, money to pay for the travel, lessons, equipment necessary to do something like be first chair violin is rare. Having the money/connections to do research in a foreign county is rare. It doesn’t mean those people aren’t exceptional or qualified it’s just that their ceiling of what they can do with their talent prior to 18yo is higher than even a middle class kid going to a great public school. From the videos I’ve seen these kids are emotionally mature, highly intelligent, and have dedicated parents. Vandy and Wake are amazing outcomes. People who are underwhelmed by this don’t have kids in this process right now. Even the ultra talented kids need to start college prep as a freshman.

I'll tell you, 5 years into a career, no one will give two shits what college you went to. what matters is the results you put out. I was a BDO for a bank, same position held by an MBA grad while I dropped out of college.
