@boucleme: They came from Jamaica in the 1950s, my grandfather to work for the GPO (the Post Office), my grandmother behind a sewing machine as a dressmaker. They grafted, they saved, and eventually they bought their own home. No handouts from the council. Just years of hard work, quietly done. My mother arrived as a child and grew up here feeling different, one of the few in her school who looked like her. She worked hard anyway. She bought her own home too, and never made a fuss about any of it. That’s the thing about this story, nobody was waiting for a handout. They were waiting for their turn to work. Carnival isn’t just a party to me. It’s Caribbean culture, built and kept alive in Britain for generations. I was born in the UK, a descendant of immigrants, and I’ve spent my career building on what my family started. Bouclème is a multi-million pound business now. It employs a team. It supports working mums. It pays its tax. Three generations on from a couple who arrived with a suitcase and nothing else.
