Actually a velomobile is more efficient than a bicycle due to the sitting position and aerodynamics

Okay but can we credit the actual video maker? It's Works By Design on YouTube.

this math assumes you're only ever pushing straight down on the pedals.

would you ride your bicycle to work if the gasoline price rose 👀

Lots of incorrect math. Torque is not due to gravity, it’s due to your leg pushing. You don’t push straight down you push in a circle and can even generate torque when bringing your foot up if it’s strapped in

Wouldn’t half of maximum torque occur at 30 degrees, not 45?

There’s a ton of shade being thrown here. Let him work it out. It’ll either be better than a standard bicycle or it won’t.

Dingus :
You haven’t make the bike more efficient, you’ve just changed the torque curve. Every part you’ve added adds friction, which makes the bike less efficient.

your physics are off because your Tibia and Fibula are always in line with the pedals, meaning the force is always equal around the circle.

cyclists should be using clip ins. clip ins let you push down and pull up. If your looking for true efficiency.

XiStanTall :
Cool concept, and plausible that it's more efficient but it starts from an assumption that cyclists feet apply zero angle adjusted pressure and have zero grip on the pedals outside of perfect perpendicularity which isn't true.

Dingus :
You can not make a bicycle more efficient. A properly set up bicycle delivers 99 percent of the power you put into the pedals to the wheels. There is no machine on earth that could do better than that.

PEAK :
Make a bike that converts you pedaling into energy and that energy is stored. Then you can use that energy whenever you want. When it runs out use the bike normally and recharge. (THIS JUST A SHOWER THOUGHT IDK IF IT WORKS OR NOT NOR DO I KNOW IF IT EXISTS OR NOT)

Cool video but the reason torque drops isn’t because of length, length stays the same throughout the system. Equation goes T = r * F * sin( theta). Distance from pivote angle * force applied * sin and its angle. Since length stays the same and assuming we have a constant force, the entirety of the results relies on sin

Creating a more uniform torque profile does not mean the bike is necessarily more efficient.
