I have a private OB I am due Jan 10, but I’ve booked into a public hospital! I’m paying $467 a night, with a minimum stay of 3 nights that you have to pay for upfront. If you don’t end up staying the full 3 nights, you’ll get a refund for the nights you didn’t use. If you stay longer than 3 nights, you’ll just need to pay for the extra nights. My OB charges $90 per visit, and I get $82 back from Medicare each time. The initial consultation was $250, and there was no Medicare rebate for that. I also have to pay my OB $5,200 for his overall fees, and we get $650 back from Medicare.

I’ve had both my babies under public hospital (they offered private too) but paid privately to see an OB. My daughter was born during Covid times but my son was born 2024. Both times the hospital tried to put mums in shared rooms on their own. I honestly don’t think it’s worth the extra money to birth private!

Mine was 12 years ago but I had a c section with a private OB and I got that for free. I stayed for two days in the public then transferred over to the private hospital.

So this is my second time doing it, you go in as a ‘private in public’ patient. You obviously pay for your OB and a minimum of 2 nights up front are paid to the hospital, everything else is free unless you need blood and so on. My hospital has put prices up since last year so this time i wanna say it’s 900-1k in hospital fees i’ll need to pay 4-6 weeks before bubs is born xx

Hey chicky babes, omg I had no idea you had to pay to have private OB to birth in public?! Wtf I looked into this for both Nepean private/public costs if I was to cut my health insurance and just pay out of pocket.. message me and I’ll happily share my bills (I ended up with top private cover and went private for birthing)but happy to share, it’ll help you compare costs! ❤️

Private OB, delivered public. I chose this due to access to 24H operating theatres and a NICU for peace of mind. For context, I’m a NICU doc so used to seeing and working in the high risk side of delivery and this 100% Influenced my choice on where I delivered. Cost about $900 per night, does not include OB management and delivery fee. This does include anaesthetic care, paediatric care and if or baby needed ICU level care. Still worked out cheaper than being uninsured delivery in the private. Hope this helps !

I have a private OB and are going into a public hospital for free. All I have to do is pay for the OBs fee separately. It’s called ‘shared care’. I still technically go public and see a public midwife but I have chosen to see a private OB at the same time. I’m located NSW.

I had a private OB, stayed at RPA (public) and had to pay approx $4600 for a private room for 5 nights. They are refunding me the money for the nights I didn’t end up staying…. But there was no guarantee I’d have the private room when I gave birth. Luckily my OB was the head of obstetrics at the hospital so that helped securing the room!

I’m in Melbourne - I did private in public and had to pay a bed fee of $250 a night or so for the public hospital, had a c-section done by my OB. but that was it (obvs OB fees were already paid) Having my own OB there was the best thing I could have done and will do it the same way next time.

Live rurally 😂. Only one OB in town and the local hospital has only two rooms. Of course if anything goes wrong I have to go to a larger hospital an hour away but if all goes to plan I get my own OB and a private room in the public system

Yes in wild I have a private midwife and I have to pay to have my baby in public it’s like $400 a night .. wild when they do less work

I had a private OB and gave birth in the hospital he operated out of and so I just paid out of pocket for my OB and then out of pocket for the hospital (close to $9k for 5 days just for the bed) and I did get some of it back from Medicare (maybe like $2k back in total?)

I understand the anxiety around the public system as someone who preferred a c section. It caused me pre natal depression worrying that I didn’t have the private health and was going to need to pay 10k for private obs but I went through public had by cel section. My scar healed amazingly, the hospital sent nurses to my house for weeks after for checks. Not one cent out of pocket.
