As the bicycle moves, the rotating tire powers the bell rather than requiring the rider to repeatedly operate it by hand. Friction between the tire and contact wheel causes the wheel to spin rapidly. That rotation drives the bell’s internal mechanism, repeatedly striking the metal dome and producing a continuous series of rings while the mechanism is engaged and the bicycle wheel is turning. Patented examples of this tire-driven bell mechanism existed by 1893, reflecting the creative mechanical engineering found on early bicycles.
