He needs to force the offense to make the first move. He committed to the left and his opponent read that. Position his body so he protects the interior of the field and force his opponent toward the sideline. Wait for the offense to make the adjustment, then attack.

He won't be a pro athlete or likely even a college athlete. Just let him have fun.

First step is make sure he enjoys it. Second step. Encourage him to play outside with the ball. At least 30 min a day. This is aside from the practices. Have him dribble and juggle wherever there’s space. Dribble around a tree dribble around shoes it doesn’t matter. Once he gets comfortable with the ball he will get better quickly. Ball mastery is first the rest will come

I’ve been coaching my club team since they were 5 now they are 11 trust me at this age speed isn’t everything his body will naturally build the power it needs over time focus on ball mastery, 1v1s, and juggling the ball at home helps their confidence with the ball don’t rush let him have fun and he’ll be just fine ⚽️

My son was heavy footed. Was fast running straight, but when a ball was involved looked like a chicken with his head cut off. It was his first season though. Conditioning first the skill with the ball will slowly come. Lastly, let him have fun. We don’t do this so they can become pros.

A lot of the comments focusing on conditioning and speed but at his age what really matters is ball mastery. I’ve been coaching kids for over 15 years. The speed, conditioning and stamina will come as he gets older. Master the ball technique ,passing, shooting first. Lots of ball mastery drills on here or YouTube.

Have him practice receiving and passing using a wall that will help a lot and juggling ... also watching a lot of soccer .. my son is a u0 player and that helped him get better with his first touch

Conditioning and agility training before anything else. Needs to be nifty and quick on his feet before anything else.

He needs more conditioning. He needs to get his feet quicker. Hes like trying to run but not really running. He’s kinda just dragging himself around.

1. Run to the attacker but leave about 6-7ft of space then switch to a 45° angle (almost sideways). 2. Anticipate (predict) attacker movement, he should've left about 15ft of space and cut off the attacker. 3. It looks like these exercises are giving him conditioning 4. Be sure to let him have fun on their own, at this age just have him play, most kids won't understand much of the intelligence part of football.
