The reason there are fewer high-paying industries in East Germany is because after the Soviet occupation of East Germany ended, companies in the West who had enjoyed a free market and had more free capital bought up state-owned companies for pennies on the dollar and then systematically moved every single big company to the West, surgically destroying any chance the East had to stand on its own two feet. The true reason the East is so much weaker economically than the West is because our government at the time allowed the East to be plundered. (I say this as someone from West Germany.)
