September 22, 2025 - 11:35AM Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Michaelia Cash has blasted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for having “rewarded” Hamas after he officially recognised Palestine at the United Nations. “I have a very simple principle – Hamas are terrorists, and you don’t reward terrorists,” Ms Cash told Sky News Australia. “I have to say what a contrast in the United States: on one side of the country, you have a memorial celebrating and honouring the life of Charlie Kirk … on the other side of the country, on the other hand, Mr Albanese is in New York and he is officially rewarding Hamas. “Hamas are terrorists for the slaughter on October 7.” The terrorist organisation in control of the Gaza Strip has publicly executed three men at the same time as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese formally recognised Palestinian statehood. Footage of the execution circulated widely on Hamas-affiliated Telegram channels after the three men were accused of collaborating with Israel. A large crowd of Gaza Strip residents gathered at the scene, filming the execution on their phones and chanting slogans in support of Hamas. After the killings, the militants left a paper on the bodies reading: “To all mercenaries of the occupation and collaborators – the time has come to cut off your heads.” Hamas executed three Palestinians in central Gaza, accusing them of collaborating with Israel. “This is a positive move forward and what it indicates is a signal that the world is getting together and saying enough is enough. We need to end the cycle of violence,” Mr Albanese told Sky News on Monday. “There's a lot of discussion about what a peace plan looks like in the short term … that means a ceasefire, it means the release of hostages, it means an end to the hostilities.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Australia, Canada and Britain, which all recognised Palestine, of giving a “huge reward” to terrorists. “Well, he, of course has a view, but he doesn’t speak for every Israeli. And we know that Israel is a democratic country,” he said. “Around Israel, there have been so many who have demonstrated in the tens and indeed hundreds of thousands of people who want an end to the conflict.  “There needs to be some surety for security … but there also needs to be the recognition that the Palestinians have legitimate aspirations for their own homeland.” The timing of the executions has intensified criticism from the opposition, which warned that recognition ahead of peace could embolden Hamas. Australia’s peak Jewish body, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), also condemned the move on Monday, describing it as counterproductive. ECAJ president Daniel Aghion KC said the government had offered no clarity on how Hamas would be excluded from a future state. “Far from creating momentum towards a two-state peace, recognition of a Palestinian state in these circumstances will set the process back,” Mr Aghion said. “Hamas and the other terrorist groups have already hailed the move as a reward for their violence and rejectionism towards Israel.” The Albanese government announced the joint recognition of Palestine with the United Kingdom and Canada on Sunday.
