This is something I think about a lot as a marketer. We spend SO much time talking about how to get more followers, more views and more reach. But if you’re creating content for your business, getting someone to follow you isn’t really the end goal. It’s what happens next. If I discover your content today and decide to follow you, is it immediately clear what you do? Can I easily find something helpful from you? Is there a reason for me to join your email list? And if I’m eventually ready to buy something, is there actually a clear path for me to do that? Because you can grow an audience and still have a HUGE gap between your content and your business. That’s why I’ve always looked at social media as part of a bigger marketing system. Your content gets someone’s attention. Your profile helps them understand what you do. Your free resources can move them onto your email list. Your emails continue building the relationship. And eventually, the right offer gives them a way to work with you or buy from you. The follower count is nice. Obviously we all want to grow.. 🙂 But as a business owner, I’m much more interested in what happens AFTER someone hits follow.
