"You had my name engraved?" Lisa looked at her as if the question were ridiculous. "Of course." "Why?" "I wanted you to have something that reminds you you're loved." Jennie's lips trembled into a smile. "You really think all of this is the bare minimum?" "Yes." "Your definition of bare minimum is completely broken." --- One evening, Jennie finally confronted her. They were sitting together on the couch, Jennie's head resting against Lisa's shoulder. "Lisa?" "Hmm?" "Why do you spend so much on me?" Lisa looked down at her. "Because I love you." "That's not an answer." She gently brushed Jennie's hair away from her face. "Because I don't want you wondering whether you're important to me." Jennie became quiet. Lisa continued. "I know gifts aren't everything. But if I can make your day easier, happier, or more beautiful, why wouldn't I?" Jennie's eyes softened. "You don't have to buy me everything." "I know." "You don't have to pay for every meal." "I know." "You don't have to give me expensive gifts." "I know." "You don't have to do any of this." Lisa smiled. "I know." Jennie blinked. "Then why?" Lisa leaned closer. "Because I want to." She kissed Jennie's forehead. "And because you're worth it." "Your definition of romance is financially irresponsible." Lisa laughed. "Maybe." Jennie hugged her tighter. "But I love you." Lisa smiled against her hair. "I love you too." After a moment, Jennie whispered: "And Lisa?" "Yeah?" "The bare minimum?" "Hmm?"
