One important thing to mention before we start: we didn’t actually spend the night in the hotel. We booked the room as part of our 24-hour Makkah and Madinah trip. We mainly used the room to make wudu before our Umrah and then to shower and freshen up afterwards. 1. The Staff and Service Starting with the basics, I found the service at the hotel to be good. The front desk experience was fine, and the housekeeping and general hotel service were also up to standard. There wasn’t anything during our visit that made me think the staff or service was a problem. Everything was fairly straightforward, which is what you want from a hotel when you’re in Makkah and your main priority is getting to the Haram, performing your Umrah and getting back. So in terms of the general hotel service, I’d give it a thumbs up. 2. The Room Size One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was the size of the room. We had two double beds, which means that you could accomodate four people. Considering what we paid for the room, I thought the amount of space we got was very reasonable. 3. Value for Money For me, this is probably the biggest positive of Voco Makkah. The hotel was around half the price of some of the hotels closer to the Haram when we were looking. You can pay considerably more to stay much closer to the Haram, or you can stay further away, accept the extra travelling time, and potentially save a substantial amount of money. For us, because this was part of a very short 24-hour Makkah and Madinah trip, paying significantly less for the hotel made sense. So purely from a value-for-money perspective, I think voco Makkah did very well. 4. Cleanliness In terms of cleanliness, I had no major complaints. The room itself was clean and generally looked well maintained. The one area where I think the hotel could do with some improvement is the bathroom. It wasn’t dirty, but a slight odour, compared with the rest of the room and the overall hotel experience, I felt that the bathroom could benefit from an upgrade or a bit of modernisation. So I wouldn't describe cleanliness as a problem — it's more that the bathroom felt like the weakest part of the room. 5. The Distance From the Haram Now we get to the biggest issue — the location. voco Makkah is more than a mile from the Haram, so this is not a hotel where you can simply walk down and be at the Haram within a few minutes. The hotel does provide a shuttle service, and we used that shuttle once, at midnight. There are people who say that the shuttle stops running at certain times, but during our experience, I wouldn't necessarily say that it simply stops altogether. It may be that the service becomes less frequent at certain times, rather than completely stopping. But this is something I would definitely check with the hotel before booking, because shuttle schedules can change. Even when you use the shuttle, there is still a fairly significant walk after you are dropped off before you reach the Haram. We also took a taxi on one of our journeys. We were able to get a taxi from right outside the Haram, around the Jabal Omar side, and the taxi took us directly back towards the hotel.
