@almighty_fushi: Otaku Doomerism: the belief that anime is entering an age of cultural amnesia, where knowledge of its history, influences and traditions is disappearing faster than it can be passed down, leaving behind a medium everyone watches but increasingly few understand. #mangatiktok #anitok #animetiktok #anime #otaku

American anime fans still view anime as cartoons no matter how much they claim otherwise. To americans they do not view cartoons as art.

I do find it is crazy how many large creators know little or nothing about anime as a whole. They yap about a few large shows and that is really all.

genuinely anime fans talk about how bleach or jojos is "influential" and then send you death threats if you say that devilman, mazinger z, space battleship yamato, rose of versailles or any work by osamu tezuka is more influential than them

Same problem in gaming. The cause is the rapid growth of the community. And someone below made another really good point which is that these discussions happen on social media and not on forums like before. To bring up gaming again, the average of a game is literally like 34 years old. Yet if you use TikTok, you’re just getting exposed to the gaming opinions of a bunch of 16 year olds. And if you only use TikTok, you might think these opinions represent most gamers when they simply don’t. The 34 year olds aren’t as active online or they’re only active in particular spaces.

I think it's a case of the people who dominate online culture and discussion now skew younger especially due to the fact these discussions are happening on social media now rather than in forums like they used to.

I’m pretty positive at LEAST 50% of people on this app don’t know what an Otaku even is. I’ve had to correct too many people from using the word weeb instead of Otaku.

During a panel at Ota 2017 I suggested the "Post-Otaku" generation of American fandom was coming. On the other side of Covid I feel that was a more prompt prediction than my audience expected

and the thing is i don’t even think it’s a bad to be a “new anime fan” but some people who fit into that status act like they know everything because of what they see in the mainstream(whether they watched/read it or not) so anything outside of it is “unknown” it’s one thing with seeing tiktok commenters saying that but it’s worse when “anime content creators” say it since you can clearly tell they have no idea of what they’re talking about

Doesn't help that people are encouraged to start with dogshit "Starter anime" (ie whatever Shonen is most popular atm) instead of anime that are actually interesting/exceptional

this is fair but also i think watching more stuff just to have a more valid opinion is stupid real anime fans genuinely just watch anime and enjoy no "base knowledge" is needed because you're just engaging in something you enjoy

I don’t think this is unique to anime. A lot of people from our generation will get mad if someone suggests liking a movie that isn’t: new, american, mainstream, “fun,” etc. in gaming, every time the goty comes around we start hearing mobs of people angry their triple A action games lose to an innovative, lesser known game. People in general seem to get mad at the suggestion that they might have biases about their interests rather than being open to new experiences. They reject things they haven’t seen as “elitist”

this has been my lived experience as well. and it's not even just being new and not aware of some stuff, but I've seen a real neglect or even antagonism of the prior culture. many people just watch new shit and disregard classics or even say they're bad cause "they're old". it's really sad to see and now I can't even connect with someone over an interest in japanese stuff because 9 times out of 10 we're just not the same at all.

The unfortunate part for me is the 80s OVA era is unbelievable from both a sheer output, style diversity, and the amount of funding that was available. It was all being made by hand! Especially given the contemporary love of Horror and DnD, Horror and Fantasy were really hitting a stride there that newer fans of the medium are less willing to engage with. There really are some hidden gems.

When I first started(after about 3 shows) I intentionally tried looking up important and classic anime to try and hit the cultural keystones. I watched them through(even though NGE and Bebop are overhyped) and it boggles the mind people don’t try to engage at that level and still call themselves fans of the medium.
