At the age of 13, I lived in Maiduguri and helped my father sell sugarcane after school. One hot afternoon, while pushing a wheelbarrow of sugarcane, I accidentally broke the headlight of a parked car. I stayed behind to admit what happened instead of running away. The car owner, who turned out to be a police officer, beat me, took me to the police station, and ordered that I be locked up. Days turned into weeks, then months. No one listened to my cries or investigated my case. Eventually, I was taken to court, placed on remand, and forgotten in the prison system. For the next 47 years, I was transferred from one prison to another across different states. I grew up behind bars, lost contact with my family, and became known as “Baba” in prison. Most people believed I was a criminal, but no one ever asked how I got there. Everything changed when I was 60 years old. During a prison visit, a governor noticed me and asked why I had been imprisoned for so long. I told him my story, and he immediately ordered an investigation. It was discovered that the police officer who had locked me up had become a respected traditional ruler. The governor personally secured my release and offered support to help me rebuild my life. When the former officer apologized and offered me a house, money, and even to arrange a marriage for me, I replied that nothing could restore the youth, family, and life I had lost. I left the palace with the governor, finally a free man after spending nearly five decades in prison for an accident committed as a child. Today, at 78 years old, I am grateful to be alive. Happy birthday to me. 🎂#freedom #free #prison #foryou #justice
