The eighth chair pulled itself out. ⸻ I stood up. I thought someone had walked in. But the door was still locked. Then my laptop started typing by itself. A sentence appeared on my screen: “YOU’RE SITTING IN THE WRONG ROOM.” I immediately grabbed my stuff. As I reached the door… It wouldn’t open. Then my phone buzzed. A notification from the campus library app: STUDY ROOM 4B — OCCUPIED I looked around. I was the only person there. Then another notification appeared. CURRENT OCCUPANTS: 8 ⸻ I counted the chairs. Seven were empty. The eighth chair was facing me. And something was sitting in it. I couldn’t see its face. It was just a dark shape. I backed toward the door. Then it slowly pointed toward the whiteboard. Written across it were eight names. Seven were crossed out. The last one was mine. Underneath was a time: 3:15 AM My phone said 3:14. ⸻ I started pounding on the door. Then I heard footsteps behind me. One step. Then another. My phone changed to 3:15. The lights went out. When they came back on… The chair was empty. The door was unlocked. I ran. As I reached the elevator, I looked back. The study room was completely dark. Then my phone buzzed one final time.
