Delirium is a sudden change in mental state that can happen to anyone, but it is especially dangerous for older adults and people with dementia. Unlike dementia, which develops slowly over months or years, delirium can develop in hours or days and symptoms can shift quickly. Someone might be alert and talking normally one moment, then confused, agitated, or drowsy the next. Common causes include urinary tract infections (UTIs), medication side effects, dehydration, pain, constipation, infection, or an unfamiliar environment. The good news is that delirium is often reversible if the cause is found and treated quickly. For caregivers, the most important takeaway is that sudden confusion, drowsiness, or changes in alertness are not normal dementia progression. They are medical emergencies. Quick action can protect quality of life and sometimes even save a life. If the person you care for already has dementia, delirium can make symptoms worse and recovery may take weeks. Always seek medical attention right away if you notice sudden changes. #dementia #delirium #UTI #caregiver #caregiving #suddenconfusion #olderadults #memoryloss #dementiacare #brainhealth #medicalemergency
