This movie always reveals a massive generational divide between GenX/Early Millenials and GenZ. Kids who grew up in the 70s, 80s and 90s can relate because they lived a version of this lifestyle, albeit MUCH tamer, but in other ways very accurately portrayed. It’s a window into a brief time period where “latchkey” kids grew up completely free from parental supervision after school and on weekends. They would wander around their town or city, get into “trouble” and experiment with s@x and dr@gs. It was the result of both lax parenting and also the absence of cell phones for checking in. That same generation turned around and raised their kids completely opposite: helicopter parents and schedules overflowing with organized events. Genz cant relate at all because even if they didn’t have such a heavily curated childhood they still had cell phones for parents to keep tabs. They also don’t like how extreme the movie is, which is understandable, and not all indicative of the norm but more as a tool to relay serious social issues at the time such as the fear of HIV/AIDS and children growing up too fast.
