Rigid metal strips on French WWI machine guns, especially the Hotchkiss M1914, were extremely reliable. Unlike cloth belts, they were not badly affected by mud or moisture and kept the cartridges correctly aligned. Their main drawback was their limited 24-round capacity, requiring frequent reloading.
