Edo Must Stand Up: 83 Division Headquarters Must Remain in Benin The recent call by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the headquarters of the newly created 83 Division of the Nigerian Army to be located in Delta State should not be treated as a minor issue by the people and government of Edo State. The Federal Government and Nigerian Army had announced Benin City as the headquarters of the new division, which has responsibility for Edo, Delta and Bayelsa. Governor Oborevwori has now formally appealed for the headquarters to be moved to Delta, citing the state’s strategic location and critical national assets. For Edo, this is more than a question of where a military headquarters should be situated. Benin City has been designated as the headquarters, and Edo cannot afford to remain silent while an institution already cited within its territory is being aggressively lobbied away. For decades, Edo has watched as questions surrounding its historical boundaries and territorial interests have generated controversies, particularly following the 1991 state-creation exercise. The people of Edo must now ask: How much more can we afford to lose through silence and political complacency? Governor Monday Okpebholo and the traditional institution of Edo must therefore act swiftly, responsibly and diplomatically. This is not a call for hostility toward Delta or its people; it is a call for Edo to defend its legitimate interests. Governor Oborevwori is entitled to make a case for his state, but Edo’s leadership equally has a responsibility to make a stronger case for why Benin City should retain the headquarters of 83 Division. This is the time for Edo to speak with one voice. The Governor, traditional rulers, political leaders, civil society and concerned citizens must engage the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army with facts, history and sound strategic arguments. Edo must not wait until a decision is taken before waking up to defend its interests. The era of watching valuable institutions and strategic advantages slip away through silence must end. Edo must stand up—not against Delta, but for Edo.
