Speaking in tongues is biblical. But I think we’ve blurred together things Scripture distinguishes. In Acts 2, the Holy Spirit enables the disciples to speak in languages they had not learned—and the people gathered at Pentecost recognize their own native languages. When Paul discusses the spiritual gift of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12–14, we get a different picture. He tells us that not every believer has the same spiritual gifts, that someone speaking in a tongue speaks to God, and that when tongues are used publicly in the church, there should be interpretation. So the question isn’t simply, “Are tongues biblical?” They are. The better question is: What does the Bible actually teach about them?
