“If someone buys gold or shares, no young couple is worse off. But in land-scarce Singapore, when one person holds a 5th or 10th residential property, it takes away another family's chance at a home,” Member of Parliament (MP) Elysa Chen said in Parliament on Oct. 6. Chen has called for the government to study a progressive holding tax on multiple investment residential properties, arguing that existing measures largely make it harder to acquire more properties, rather than hold on to them. She suggested to progressively increase rental income tax rates from an individual’s 3rd property onwards, while leaving the first 2 for occupation and investment. “Wealth packed in housing is not flowing and building anything else,” Chen said. “It simply hoards that wealth and pushes up the price of residential properties for everyone else.” MP Shawn Loh also raised concerns about the wealth divide, suggesting higher property taxes on higher-value investment properties and taxes on wealth “that is not earned but inherited”. Loh argued that as increases in property values are partly due to Singapore’s collective success, some of these gains “should be shared with those that have less”. #mothershipparliament
