@phiwa.the.long.vi: The history of the word Afrikaner is older and more complicated than most people realise. Important correction; I am not saying the Oorlams were the first people ever recorded using the word Afrikaner. Hendrik Biebouw used Afrikaander in 1707. The Oorlam Afrikaners are important because the name became an established family and community identity long before modern Afrikaner nationalism. #fyp #afrikaans #capetown #xhosanation #southafrica

Umm Al-Abnaa :
I grew up with quite a few Jonker and Afrikaner families. And was related to them. My grandma would tell me that "they are oorlammers". They eventually merged into to rest of the coloured community and no longer identified as Oorlammers even though they knew that they are of Oorlam descent.

Thank you so much for taking my suggestion and making such a brilliant video on this, Phiwa 🥹🫶🏽! The history of the Oorlam Afrikaners is such a crucial missing piece in how we understand South African and Namibian history today. It’s wild how many people don't realize the Nama roots connected to the term 'Afrikaner' long before it became associated exclusively with a white identity. You explained the lineage from Oude Ram to Jonker perfectly! I really hope some descendants see this and chime in. Love, love love your content!!

Afrikaner means from Africa. These people saw themselves as part of the land, not leaving, not longing to go back... they identified deeply with their new home and new identity and culture. Boer means those that left the Cape in the trek, to escape British rule and opposed British rule. Boere are the pioneers that set out

We still got the Afrikaner surname in our midst. So the white Afrikaans speaking people stole an identity?

Imran Simmins :
The irony of all this is that today they (those of Dutch descent who stole the language) have bastardised and derogatised the word “oorlam” to refer to someone “shrew” or “sly.”

That is how they stole everything. First our lands and then our culture and then our identity. White people are not Afrikaners. They are Europeans as per their own Apartheid system
