I didn't know Hijra is frowned upon. I shall stop using it.

They are still very respected in Pakistan. In fact, Pakistanis believe that the blessings from trans people is always granted and will invite them to celebrations to grant blessings.

Interesting. I think this explains why there seem to be fewer trans women in Western countries compared to some Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines. In the Philippines, even before Spanish colonization, there were gender-diverse spiritual leaders known as babaylan. So trans and gender diversity have existed for a long time. The West just made it seem like it was something wrong or unnatural.

Same in Bangladesh! As a trans Bengali, I’m so proud of the fact that South Asia holds the oldest trans communities in the world

In navajo we are called, Nadleehi, and of course Christianity has pushed us out. but more traditional people still accept us for who we were once within our tribe.

The Hindu community in India actually has a religious deity who is the protector of the trans community - Maa Bawchar 🙏

This is super interesting. When you say they were accepted do you actually mean seem and treated as women? The ladyboy culture for example is very accepted in Thailand mainly because they don’t see themselves and don’t claim to be women. I wonder if acceptance is granted when you compromise with the society to live in

How come masculine 3rd gender women aren’t revered as well? Females who live as males? We never hear of them..

The same in many cultures where the Europeans came tries to erase and brainwash people into thinking they’re horrible for existing. Muxes in Mexico, Māhū in Hawaii, Fakaleiti in Tonga, Machi in Chile etc.

Many countries that were colonised have traditions that accept what we now call LGBT people. But instead of reclaiming that, they view LGBT as a western white coloniser invention now, because after exporting homophobia and transphobia, we also exported our liberation movement 😅 decolonisation is not simple, and as an English person, I am sorry
