Kyokanoko Musume Dōjōji (Excerpt #1: Ranbyōshi & Chūkei no Mai), National Theatre, Tokyo, performed by Ranshou Fujima ー Kyokanoko Musume Dōjōji was first premiered in 1753, and it is the most important dance piece in kabuki (dance) history. "Kabuki dance" refers to either the dance performances that take place in a kabuki play or a kabuki play centered on dance, also known as "shosagoto." It was developed after the Genroku period (1688-1704) and has always been closely tied to "onnagata," a form of performance in which male actors play female roles (The onnagata practice first emerged in the 17th century, when women were barred from acting in kabuki theatre). The most notable kabuki dance programs, such as Kyokanoko musume dōjōji (京鹿子娘道成寺), Shujyaku jishi (執着獅子), Sagi musume (鷺娘), and Sekinoto (積恋雪関扉), first premiered in the 18th century and were subsequently developed further by kabuki actors. Examples of early onnagata grandmasters include Segawa Kikunojō (1693-1749) and Nakamura Tomijūrō (1719-1786), both of whom established key programs in the Dōjōji genre—respectively, Keisei Dōjōji and Kyokanoko Musume Dōjōji. The structure of the programs was adapted from the noh play regarding a tragic love myth of Anchin and Kiyohime, but they veered away from "story-acting" but focusing "dance movement" with feminity as opposed to the noh masculine style. Nakamura Utaemon VI once said that Kyokanoko Musume Dōjōji is the king of onnagata and there's no greater piece of repertoire than it. #kabuki- #dance #nationaltheatre #theater #theatre #classical #古典 #History #藤間蘭翔
