I did exactly that in my 20s. Now I’m in my 70s. I’m about to do it again, but I don’t know how the world will react to me when I’m not as beautiful, I’m not as visibly helpless or perceived to be vulnerable, will doors be closed to me this time? Will I be invisible? Will fellow travelers decades younger shun me because I don’t look like them? I have all those questions, but—- I’ve got to go find out. Just got my backpack out tonight, I’ll be on the road soon, solo again, and I’m giving myself two years.

My sister went to Eastern China. She saw this man squatting over a puddle, brushing his teeth. She said she felt sorry for him, but then he looked up at her with the biggest smile. Right then she realized that happiness was a perspective. Ive aways remembered that. 💖

How do you pay for this? I commend you and feel that everyone should do this for a part of their life (or whatever the choose to do). My biggest concern is if you have no money coming in and funds going out, how long can you survive that? Keep going, keep growing and find your happiness everyday. Best!

I can assure you that the people with “no shoes and no money” and “eating what they can” are not “happy” and are struggling in ways you don’t understand as an outsider. If they’re smiling or looking cheerful, it’s not evidence that they’re happy with their life but your limited interpretation of their reality. When you’re born into poverty, you have very few options but to lean on community and optimism for survival because there is no alternative. But to say they are content with thier circumstances is ignorant. You don’t know their worries, their financial insecurity or whether they’re simply enduring what they cannot change.
