@tricyclemag: Growing up in a Baptist family in Virginia, Leslie Booker recognized around the age of 10 that there were two different Christianities she was experiencing. The first was a manifestation of deep love and care within the home. The other, teachings of hatred while at church. This discordance did not sit well, and by the age of 12, she asked her parents for clarity. Her mother, in her wisdom, shared that any teaching can be manipulated, skewed, and exploited to serve individual interests. It didn't matter which religious or spiritual path Booker took, said her mother. Her only request was for Booker to remember to care for and treat others as one would wish to be treated.
