The Saxons broke ground on these bulwarks around 1370, raising stone and hope atop an older Roman settlement, a sentinel forged by fear of the Mongols and later, the relentless Ottoman tides. The fortress—called Stolzenburg by its Saxon builders—grew like a stubborn weed through the 15th and 16th centuries, its red bricks soaking up the sweat of villagers and the smoke of sieges. In 1529, Ottoman cannons battered its ramparts, and still Slimnic endured, repurposed, reimagined: it served as sanctuary, granary, parish refuge, even a clandestine pulpit when Catholic and Protestant lines were drawn in blood. The village below is a quiet ledger of these centuries, its pastel houses and lopsided cemetery holding secrets as old as Vlad the Impaler’s first breath.
