@c5news: “I’m going to have to go in” Police officers were forced to wade into the sea to arrest a sex offender who tried to escape. Officers were called to Porthcawl seafront, South Wales, to a report of a man who had been sending inappropriate messages to a girl he believed to be under 16. Newly released body-cam footage of the incident in October 2025 shows two officers following 45-year-old Gavin Bennett into the Bristol Channel “to make sure this guy is safe" and make the arrest. Officers can be seen shining torches through complete darkness just before 10pm, with one warning his colleague to “be careful in the current”. Bennett was slowly pulled to shore, detained and transported to hospital for checks, before being taken into custody. He later admitted two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and on Tuesday was sentenced to three years and eight months jail and handed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. The sentence also covered two counts of sexually assaulting a female, relating to a separate incident spanning two years.
