On April 28, 2026, Specialist Zapata (a 30-year Marine veteran and Purple Heart recipient) was outside a home taking a routine, day-old car burglary report. The burglary suspect was not on the scene. Instead, an unrelated neighbor from across the street, 39-year-old Angel Cantu, unexpectedly opened fire on Zapata with a pellet rifle. Zapata was struck in the face and suffered a severe injury to his left eye. Despite being wounded and unarmed, Zapata successfully shielded the female resident, ushered her to safety, and called for armed backup. Following a multi-hour manhunt, the shooter was arrested and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault on a public servant. After undergoing surgeries and spending months recovering, Specialist Zapata returned to full duty in July 2026. The incident sparked community and police union discussions regarding whether CRU personnel should be armed or accompanied by sworn officers on field calls.
