@powers_plants: We never want mulch and soil above the height of your foundation or slab. The height of the soil plus a few inches of mulch on top, should still leave me 3 to 4 inches of concrete visible above the mulch. Mulch and soil hold water and they trap it up against the walls and as you can see from my clients detached garage, any wood materials will rot from having water pushed up against them. After you get the grade correct you then need to slope or pitch the land away from the structure.
