We must have had a different way where I grew up. Elementary through graduation we ate the lunch, it was never taken from us. But it was noted. We have free breakfast and lunch here now where we are (since at least 2020), which made all the difference for so many families. Why it isn’t, and hasn’t always been free for ALL children across every corner of this country? I don’t have a clue.

I’m a retired elementary school lunch lady & once I became the kitchen manager I instructed my staff to NEVER take a child’s lunch away because there was no money in their account. It should never be a child’s responsibility to have money in their account! Fortunately the district I worked in changed the rule over ten years ago to keep giving kids the lunch choice that they wanted. And we knew which kids needed more food (by the negative balance in their account) and would PILE food on their tray. The regime in charge is an absolute disgrace!

food at school is so important, I had free/reduced throughout schooll! Universal meale have made me so happy because it would definitely be a burden on our household! Not just financial but the emotional burden of putting that lunch together. And on the plus side I am a playground monitor and I also get a free lunch!

I feel like this is gonna sound dramatic but I developed a stomach ulcer from being scared I wouldn't have money from lunch in 1st grade. They would give you pb&j if you didnt have money and I HATE peanut butter. My mom ended up getting me shoes that had a zipper pocket to keep a $20 in just in case. It helped so much, even if I never used the $20, knowing I had it made all the difference

the government is really trying to use school to teach kids to keep coming and doing work no matter if youre tired, hungry, or even sick. if they dont they get publicity shamed. they are not taking care of the future generations, they are training these kids to accept the worst and be grateful for it😡.

My little town in Ohio gives all of their kids, free breakfast and free lunch. Our taxes are high, but our kids are fed.

My son’s teacher supplies a healthy snack to the class because it’s so long until lunch. For some kids school meals may be the only food they get. Free and reduced lunch is in jeopardy here

Ours was a choice between a cheese sandwich or a bologna and cheese sandwich, always mushy somehow but sans condiments.

We got peanut butter in those little packages like the jelly and crackers. Peanut butter and crackers. Then made it the kids job to tell the parents we didn’t have money

My Aunt started a program to help provide breakfast to kids in need along with helping with lunch as a former elementary teacher. When she passed last year her husband asked for family to donate to the program she started over helping with funeral expenses.

that shit sucked ass my grams made me a nice lunch cause my bill was over due well wat happened was I was reamed n skoaled how I can't have this regardless if I brought or not. the aid took my lunch so as they turned their back to walk away I jumped on this aids back n took them to the floor. then I realized my youngest sister a few grades apart had a decent lunch from the school. I was kicked out for 2 wks . I was only like 5 th 6th grade. I never cared for the segregated treatment .
